Punjab, Pakistan has become the first province globally to implement the Sikh Marriage Act, a historic move that recognizes and regularizes Sikh marriages.

The Punjab cabinet, led by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, approved the ‘Punjab Anand Karaj Marriage Registrar Rules 2024’, which officially recognizes Sikh marriages according to their own religious practices.

This decision is a significant step forward for the Sikh community, who previously had to register their marriages under the Hindu Marriage Act, which did not cater to their unique customs and traditions.

The implementation of the Sikh Marriage Act is a major milestone for the Sikh community in Punjab, who can now have their marriages officially recognized and registered according to their own religious practices.

This move is also seen as a significant step towards inclusivity and equality for minority groups in the region.

The Punjab government’s decision is expected to set a precedent for other regions to follow, ensuring the legal recognition of diverse marriage customs.

The Sikh community has welcomed this decision, with Provincial Minister for Minorities Ramesh Singh Arora expressing his appreciation for the initiative.

The Punjab government’s commitment to recognizing and formalizing the marriages of various religious communities is a positive step towards promoting religious harmony and inclusivity.
