The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has directed authorities to relocate former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, from the Bani Gala sub-prison to Adiala jail.
Justice Miangul Hassan Aurangzeb of the IHC announced the decision following a reserved judgment on Bushra Bibi’s plea for transfer to Adiala jail, where her husband is currently detained.
After hearing arguments on May 2, the high court reserved its verdict. The jail superintendent cited overcrowding and security concerns, expressing inability to accept Bushra Bibi.
Furthermore, the court invalidated the notification designating Bushra Bibi’s Bani Gala apartment as a sub-jail.
Bushra Bibi was placed under house arrest at her Bani Gala residence on January 31, following her conviction in the Toshakhana case. At the request of the Adiala jail superintendent, officials designated her Bani Gala residence as a “sub-jail” for detention.
On February 6, Bushra Bibi contested the decision to confine her at Bani Gala for a 14-year term in the case. In her plea, she expressed willingness to serve her prison sentence in the ordinary premises of Adiala Jail rather than at her designated sub-jail residence.
Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan were each sentenced to 14 years in prison by Judge Muhammad Bashir of the accountability court in the Toshakhana case. The court also barred Imran Khan from holding public office for ten years and imposed a fine of Rs 1.57 billion (Rs 787 million each) on Khan and his wife.
