In a potential first for Tamil Nadu, a 31-year-old man from Chennai, who lost both his arms below the elbow in a childhood electric accident, has received a unique driving license from the North Chennai regional transport office.
K. Thansean, a resident of Vyasarpadi, obtained the license based on a fitness certificate issued by government doctors.
Thansean, currently pursuing a Master of Laws at Dr Ambedkar Government Law College, expressed his joy at being granted the license, emphasizing the importance of encouraging disabled individuals who enjoy driving.
He believes that such individuals should be able to obtain licenses without facing excessive hurdles.
After receiving the license, Thansean wasted no time in taking his family for a drive to a temple in Perambur. Despite the surprised reactions from people on the road, he maneuvered the car effortlessly with his legs, garnering appreciation from onlookers.
His longest drive to date was to a temple in Tiruttani, where he managed the modified vehicle with ease. The car’s controls, including the horn, indicator, wiper, and light switches, are conveniently placed near the handbrake for his accessibility.
Thansean’s aspirations don’t end with driving a car; he dreams of riding a bike next. Currently practicing to master bike riding, he aims to obtain a bike license in the near future, demonstrating his determination to overcome challenges and pursue his passions.
