The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has proposed a new regulatory framework requiring Over-The-Top (OTT) services, including YouTube, Netflix, WhatsApp, Facebook, and Twitter, to register locally.

The proposed rule would apply to all OTT services, including communication services like Viber, Skype, and WhatsApp, Application services like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and Non-Broadcasting Media Services like YouTube, Netflix, and Spotify.

The draft paper has been published to solicit feedback from stakeholders, with a deadline set for public feedback.

The public is encouraged to review the draft and provide their opinions and suggestions on how these regulations might impact them and the services they use.

Digital rights activists warn that the PTA’s move reflects a desire for increased control over online content. The PTA previously attempted similar regulations in 2020, which were met with criticism from digital rights advocates.
